Ninth graders explore contemporary Korea as well as pre-war Korea. In this Korea lesson, 9th graders read One Thousand Chestnut Trees. Students participate in classroom discussions about excerpts from the novel and research historical and cultural topics related to the novel.
Students examine the various domestic and international problems in the 1950s. They conduct research, write a script, and role-play a family discussing issues at the table at dinnertime in the 1950s.
Fifth graders write letters "home" taking on the role of one of the sons of the "Gold Star Mothers" from Union County, NC.
Students examine the division of North and South Korea. They identify the ideological differences and the tensions between the two countries. They discuss the threat of nuclear weapons as well.
Learners research the political climate prior to major American wars of the past, then reflect on the current call for power to confront Iraq. They create posters using newspaper articles and headlines to highlight the major opinions of that time.

Students analyze the picture as a significant medium of communication. They view a photo from the "Images of War" website, answer discussion questions, complete an independent photo analysis, and create a photo essay.
Students research the roles of the reserve armed forces in a variety of United States military conflicts, then create a documentary that illustrates the contributions of part-time soldiers.

Students survey what it is like to have family members deployed during a war. In this history instructional activity, students read letters that were written home during many different wars throughout history, then the students write their own letter home, as if they were fighting in a war.
Sixth graders explore agriculture as it relates crops throughout a series of historical events. In this agriculture activity, 6th graders read and create a timeline of the 50 year increments that depict important cause and effect events. Students then use resources to further learn about the history behind agriculture. Students then acquire new terminology related to this topic.
