Land Use Lesson Plans

Students construct a movie using Landsat images to observe changes over time on Earth. In this satellite images lesson plan, students observe changes in land use over time and document one type of change they observe. They produce an annotated image showing new land and when it was created.

Students identify social and ecological considerations where human uses of land and trees conflict with each other and ecosystem needs, and describe importance of land-use management and planning through role play.

Students examine, through demonstration and experimentation, how water moves through watershed, identify pollutants that can enter water system from different land use activities, and discuss ways people can help prevent water pollution.

Students define water basin and watershed. They name the major water basins in PA. and describe factors that influence water quality in our watershed, such as geology and land use

Students are introduced to the differences that exist in soil properties with depth. They are introduced to the factors that influence a soil's development (soil forming factors). Pupils are introduced to the impact of soil of soil compositional differences on land use.

Students examine how people who came before them used the land and the resources. They examine future problems with using the land in different ways.

Students conduct a visual survey to discover information about local land use and water quality; document their findings by mapping and profiling the water body; and use this initial investigation to raise questions about local land use.

Students study positive and negative aspects of land use laws and zoning ordinances. They participate in a land use planning exercise using a role play activity.

Students explore land use issues and settlement patterns. In this Fort Vancouver Reserve instructional activity, students analyze maps of the area and then respond to questions about the maps. Students then listen to a description of the fort and read diary entries by Narcissa Whitman in order to compare and contrast activities on the land during 3 different time periods.

Students role play as members of interest group with a stake in a local land use issue. In preparation for the town hall meeting, students research their issue and gather pertinent information to persuade their audience.
