Latin America Lesson Plans

Students consider how to strengthen democratic principles in Latin America. In this government systems lesson, students explore the challenges to democratic forms of government in Latin America as they examine primary sources. Students conduct research regarding 3 Latin American nations and create profiles for the nations that feature facts about the nations and the work being done in the nation to promote democracy.

Students are introduced to the Amate Bark Paintings, a folk art from Latin America. They explore the history and symbolism of typical bark paintings and produce their own version of a bark painting.

Students determine the symbolism of Latin American flags. In this Latin America lesson, students research the cultures and histories of countries as well as the history behind their flags. Students recreate the flags and share their findings with their classmates.

Learners examine how Latin America was affected by the Holocaust in Europe. In groups, they research topics related to Latin America and World War II. They interview survivors if possible and discover how entire nations were effected by this time in history.

Learners examine the many challenges facing the nations of Latin America today.  In this World Geography lesson, learners analyze various documents that will help strengthen democracy.  Learners create a visual profile of different nations in Latin America.

Students examine the national flag of Latin American countries. In this Latin America lesson, students research the background of symbolism of flags from Latin American countries. Students create replications of the flags as well and present them before their classmates.

This lesson has learners participate in a series of lessons that leads to a formal assessment about Latin America and the Caribbean. They find information using class and other resources and then review for a test. The lesson includes some sample questions for the teacher to use.

This lesson has students research a Latin American country. They select a country in Latin America to research. They complete a chart related to their country including the country's religions, jobs, chief natural resources, and the relationship with the United States.

Students engage in a lesson that is about the physical features of Latin America and the Caribbean. They conduct research using different resources and focus on the topics included in the lesson to keep the information search on track.

This lesson has students use the Internet to research ancient civilizations of modern day Latin America and develop awareness of Civilizations predating Columbus. They discover which peoples do not fit into the Western Civilization paradigm and compare different pre-Columbian civilizations.
