Middle schoolers and high schoolers examine the ethics of using human test subjects in scientific research. They do a simulation which focuses on yellow fever and how human subjects were used to develop a treatment/cure for the disease after the Spanish American War.
Students research how climate, distance, population shifts and immigration have influenced American baseball. They also consider how players from other countries have made their mark on American baseball.
Students explore the benefits and drawbacks of free trade from the perspective of the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile and Mexico. For homework, they each write a letter to the editor expressing their personal viewpoint on trade.
Discuss and reflect on the concept of ally and alliances. They examine the competition between the United States and Venezuela. Using the New York Times, they search for examples of geopolitical alliances. They write a persuasive essay in support of either the United States or Venezuela.
Young scholars examine proposals to combat AIDS, VRSA, and measles and recommend one that they could support. They investigate how people can have very different feelings about such proposals.
Students use the New York Times article profiling ordinary citizens who legally own guns as the basis of a role-playing exercise in which they explore the types of people who own firearms and their personal reasons for doing so.
High school learners view a video clip about how taking a journey can change a person's outlook on life. They write a paragraph about a place that uses imagery and tone to create a specfic effect. They evaluate their journal entries as well.
Learners determine the reasons for Francisco Pizarro's success in vanquishing the Incas. They research the factors that played the greatest role in the conquest of the Inca Empire and write a paper explaining their conclusions.
Have your class do research on natural disasters and create a presentation using this resource. In completing this activity, learners apply the five geography themes to their research. They write a paper describing their results. It's a great way to provide a cross-curricular approach.
Students view a film about the fall of Peru's president. They develop possible solutions for governments to follow when dealing with terrorism. They work together to research civil liberty limitations put in place during war. They write an essay stating their point of view.
