Middle schoolers run a computer simulation. They collect data as they work and use the data to create an annual report for their business. Several different simulations could be used for this project. It is desirable for students to do this project individually, but it could be done as a class using a large screen monitor.
Students create their own bar graph using M&M's and a M&M recording sheet. They record the information using Microsoft Excel, complete their M&M recording sheet and take turns rotating to the computer to complete their graphs once the graphs are completed, they also create 3 word problems using their graph.
Students work as a whole class, and are allowed a buddy as the make graphs using data from a class tally of the students' mitten colors. They determine the total number of students in the class, make a bar and pictograph with the information. They use "more than" and "less than" to compare two sets on the graph using a sentence.

Pupils compare graphs of weather occurrences. In this environmental lesson plan, students will being using the website to gather weather related information for a certain time period. The pupils will then graph the data that will be discussed as a class to show proof of ENSO.
In this misleading graphs activity, students solve 4 short answer problems. Students analyze bar and line graphs. Students determine which graph is misleading.
Students collect and compare bugs using magnifying lenses and graph data based on their comparisons. In this bugs lesson plan, students also make an aspirator by using a jar, tubing, and screen.
Students compare climates around the world using the information from the regions database. In this earth science instructional activity, students discover the factors that affect climate through a webquest.
