Mass Lesson Plans

Third graders explore density and water properties by participating in a measurement activity. In this mass measurement lesson, 3rd graders utilize a bucket of water, sponge, balance and cups to measure a sponge as it is dry and after it has been soaked with water. Students compare the different measurements of the sponge and complete a worksheet based on their investigation.

Third graders define matter, weight, and explore metric mass measurement. In groups, they estimate the mass of objects, find the actual mass, and record the information. They identify the tool used to measure mass and the correct abbreviation. Additional technology, multi-sensory and community activities are listed.

Students measure mass, volume and density. In this measurement lesson, students learn vocabulary words associated with mass, volume and density. Students discuss the types of measurement and record the mass, volume and density of various objects. Students graph their results.

Learners compare and convert units of measure within the U. S. Customary system and determine the appropriate unit of measure for a particular problem. They discuss comparisons that can be used to estimate various measurements. Using a Measuring Mania data sheet, students record an item for each measurement that can be found in the classroom.

Students begin to distinguish between grams and kilograms. In this mass and measurement activity, students view pictures and tell the mass weight of the picture shown. Students decide which unit to measure with and solve word problems in groups. Students begin to convert grams to kilograms.

Students participate in a qualitative discussion of the distinction between weight and mass, followed by a description of astronaut mass measurements in a zero-g environment.

Second graders investigate the concept of mass while conducting experiments in class to find the mass of two different objects. They create a graphic organizer to compare and contrast objects. Then students create a lab journal to chronicle what was discovered about mass.
