Students research a pilgrim by name that travelled on the Mayflower. In this Mayflower lesson, students explore what life was like for a pilgrim on the Mayflower, then make a map of the journey and create a drawing of the ship.
Eighth graders investigate historical documents of the United States by reading the Mayflower Compact. In this U.S. History lesson, 8th graders analyze the wording of the original Mayflower Compact of the first U.S. settlers and complete a worksheet in pairs. Students write their own version of a Compact which allows them to express what is important in their lives.
Students take a virtual trip on the Mayflower to explore scarcity. In this scarcity lesson plan, students choose items to take on a cross-sea journey. Students discuss a trip on the Mayflower and the problems in a cross-sea trip at the time. Students answer questions about the virtual trip.
Students research the Mayflower. In this United States history instructional activity, students listen to the story On the Mayflower. They build their own Mayflower from a refrigerator box and blocks.
Second graders use a meter tape to compare the length of the Mayflower to a basketball court and make homemade butter for crackers. Afterward, all students sit inside the makeshift Mayflower's dimensions and enjoy their Pilgrim butter.
Students explore facts about the Mayflower. In this United States history lesson, students discuss the shape and measurements of the Mayflower. Students use tape to measure off the area of the Mayflower on the ground and review the cargo carried on the ship.
Young scholars explore the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact. They practice these concepts by examining the school rules.
It all begins with the book On the Mayflower, by Kate Walsh. Third graders will review vocabulary from the book then get into groups to participate in four different learning centers focused on the idea that things, people, and ideas change over time. Each center is a fun 15 minute activity: making a memory quilt, creating a time line, building a ship, and using a graphic organizer to compare and contrast their life with that of a pilgrim child.
Fourth graders investigate the hardships Pilgrims faced on the Mayflower and Speedwell. In this Pilgrim lesson, 4th graders listen to an account of the Pilgrim's voyage from Plymouth, England to present day Massachusetts. Students sit in a small taped off area of the classroom to experience the cramped quarters of the Mayflower. Students sing "The Speedwell and Mayflower song."
Students read historical documents. In this freedom lesson, students discuss the freedoms they have, such as whom to play with at recess, and how the pilgrims must have felt when they landed in America. Students read The Mayflower Compact and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and discuss the rights they guarantee.
