Third graders study how the United States declared war on Mexico and succeeded in gaining control of California. Several activities are included in the lesson. The lesson outline is included as a link.
Students, in groups, explore a specified part of the history of Texas and the flags that flew over the territory. They write a summary of the information, create a copy of the flag for a particular time period, and design posters of important events and chronologically display them in the room. Students share their information with the class.
Young scholars form cooperative learning groups and research the history of Mexico and Mexican culture in this technology-based webquest. The student groups present their findings at the end of the lesson.
