Fifth graders create their own chance music (aleatoric music) compositions using standard music notation. For this integrated composition and probability lesson, 5th graders experiment with simple music composition on tuned instruments. Additionally, students conduct simple probability experiments using a five-sided number generator or spinner to answer questions about probability.
First graders have an opportunity to use both creative and logical sides of the brain by developing an understanding that ALL words have a logical, patterned rhythm of their own, and by being able to create and perform their own unique musical compositions.
Students write an original song using music composition software such as Music Time. By doing this, students identify another use for the computer besides word processing and games.
Second graders create a music composition. In this music lesson, 2nd graders read the poem Ladybug Ladybug and recite it. Students create a music composition and present it to the class.
Students notate a short musical composition using the notation software Sibelius. This composition is based on a the student's favorite childhood memory. Based on their emotions felt at this time, they incorporate tempo, range, and modality into their composition piece.
Students study articulations of music. In this study of music lesson, students identify articulations needed to perform musical compositions. Students discuss, take quizzes, listen to and play excerpts of basic articulation styles.
Learners compose a simple melody using the notes of the D Major Scale. Criteria/Rubric for evaluation is provided with variations depending on skill level of students. A minimum of one forty-five minute class period is needed for this lesson.
Students study the life and music of composer, Samuel Barber. In groups, representing trees, water, and stars they use interpretive dance to tell the story of the musical composition, 'Adagio for Strings, Op. 11' by Barber.
Sixth graders distinguish several sequences of sound as they explore the basic elements in musical compositions in this seven lesson unit. Spoken sequences lead to the use of the major musical scale to create songs.
Sixth graders describe, analyze and compare music compositions and performances, their own and others. In the process, they will develop criteria to support their choices in written and verbal forms.
