Students alter music to create a new sound. In this modern music lesson plan, students listen to and identify musical selections, discuss the concept of a national anthem and discuss the creation of the Star Spangled Banner. Students discuss changing styles of music and how they would change music to make it sound more like music today. Students create a new music version.
Fourth graders investigate the importance of The Star Spangled Banner after listening to a teacher explanation of how Francis Scott Key wrote the song. They talk about the battle during the War of 1812 that led to the writing of the song. Working in two groups they role play as the British and the Americans, watch a PowerPoint, and listen to the lyrics of the song.
Fourth graders perform research about the star spangled banner and then perform the song. The background to the song helps to build literacy skills with the writing of a paper. The author is also investigated for historical context.
Students explore the national anthem. In this "Star Spangled Banner" lesson students view a primary source picture of the War of 1812. Students discover the meaning of the lyrics.

Ninth graders consider the history of "The Star Spangled Banner". In this American symbols lesson, 9th graders examine the meaning of symbols in the American Flag, read the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, and explain why Francis Scott Key wrote the words as he did.
Fourth graders improvise missing harmony accompaniment for a soloist performing "The Star Spangled Banner." Groups select several familiar melodies that they can produce while individual students take turns improvising a new harmony part.
