Native American Lesson Plans

Fifth graders give a class presentation. In this instructional activity on Native American stereotypes, 5th graders present information on a chosen Native American tribe.  Students include information on where the tribe lived and a photographs of  real Native Americans. Students then discuss Native American and general stereotypes.

Learners participate in a skit. In this Native American history instructional activity, students read a book about Native Americans and answer comprehension questions. Learners then read a story about the Wampanoag people and work in groups to act out a portion of the story.

Students write an expository paragraph about the uses of the Nashua River for the Native Americans and the European Colonists. In this river uses lesson plan, students determine the causes and effects of both parties using the river.

First graders participate in a webquest about Native Americans. In this informative writing lesson, 1st graders use information they gather about Native Americans to create a writing graphic organizer using Kidspiration. Students identify unique features about tribes, their foods and culture. Students get into groups and share what they have learned.  

Students examine federal policies regarding Native Americans. For this Native American assimilation and removal policies lesson, students conduct research to compare the changes in federal policy regarding Native Americans between the Washington and Jackson presidencies.

Students explore Native American tribes by examining photographs.  In this American Indian culture lesson, students analyze images from a slide-show which presents different tribes of Native Americans which students identify.  Students examine ways Native American tribes utilized their land for survival.

Fourth graders create a Native American dictionary. In this American History lesson, 4th graders are given a list of Native American terms to look up online. They make their own typed up dictionary with definitions and a decorated cover.

Young scholars explore the past and present with Native American Tribes. In this US history lesson, students analyze native American photos and record their thoughts on a thinking chart. Young scholars use these photos and consider the Native American perspective.

Young scholars define and discuss term ecosystem, explore where and how Native Americans got their food, discuss origins of corn, and create "Three Sisters" garden on construction paper using corn, beans, and squash seeds to design their own planting pattern.

Young scholars describe the life of a Native American tribe native to their area. They form small groups and visit stations in the classroom to read about various Native American tribes. They write journal entries and draw pictures of the tribes they researched.
