Changing Seasons

Explore expository writing and using precise language in this descriptive paragraph writing lesson. Elementary and middle schoolers brainstorm prior knowledge about the changing seasons in Ohio. They describe seasonal items in plastic baggies, view seasonal pictures from clipart, and complete a "changing seasons" graphic organizer. After write and revise a paragraph using this information, they use a rubric to evaluate their writing.

Paragraph Development

Pupils create a paragraph using the GADS method of paragraph writing. Working in small groups, students are given individual sentences that comprise a whole paragraph. Student groups decide on the proper order for their sentences in order to create a paragraph.

 

PICTURE READING - PARAGRAPH WRITING

Students investigate the elements found in a media image. The image is used to compose a descriptive paragraph. They exchange papers to discuss the writing and make changes using constructive criticism. Students also make connections with how pictures can convey emotions.

 

Paragraph Writing About Animals

Pupils explore animal characteristics by participating in a paragraph writing activity. In this writing structure instructional activity, students identify the importance of a topic and transition when writing descriptive sentences about a subject. Pupils describe a single animal while using vocabulary, proper paragraph form and descriptive details.

 

Six Trait Writing with Kenneth Grahame and Ogden Nash

Third graders complete a unit of lessons on the process of six trait writing. They identify good writing traits, read and evaluate poems, literature, and myths, utilize a rubric to evaluate their own writing, and evaluate classmates writing.

 

Descriptive Paragraphs

Third graders gain the necessary skills to write a descriptive paragraph. They see the evaluation and decision making process that are used in good wriitng. The bible is used to see illustrations and then used to paint a picture in writing. Not only do students use their senses, they edit, proofread, reviese and publish their paragraph.

 

Connotation and Denotation: How Word Choice Affects a Paragraph

Review denotation, connotation, diction, and mood in paragraph writing. After defining the terms, middle schoolers practice writing examples for both connotation and denotation. They complete a connotation and denotation graphic organizer and char, and then practice incorporating the elements using the paragraphs on the final worksheet.

 

Six Trait Writing with Jonathan Swift and Washington Irving

Fourth graders demonstrate and evaluate the six traits of writing. They read and identify good writing and bad writing, utilize a rubric to self-evaluate their own writing, participate in a Reader's Theater, and publish a class book.
