Students look at Edward and the Pirates and learn sentence fluency for use in describing science topics.  In this sentence fluency lesson, students plan paragraphs by creating sentence starters.  Students then create developing sentences.

 

Animal Characteristics

Third graders classify animal characteristics using a software program. In this animal characteristic lesson, 3rd graders use Inspiration software to copy and paste animal characteristics under the proper headings. They write a comparison paragraph that includes a main idea sentence, four details, and a concluding statement.

A Happy Time

Second graders listen to stories about feelings and identify their own feelings during certain times of their lives. In this a happy time lesson, 2nd graders explore writing elements as a way to communicate with a variety of audiences for different purposes. Students complete a graphic organizer related to a personal experience about a happy time.

 

Wild Horses of the Outer Banks

Students explore animal habitats.  In this cross curriculum animal survival and writing lesson, students view a website about wild horses on Shackelford Island and discuss ways in which the horses have changed to this environment.  Students write an expository piece about this process, and then compare it to a 6th grade middle school environment in a second piece of writing.

 

Pathwise Instruction Plan-Sequencing Events

First graders write an expository paragraph. In this paragraph writing literacy lesson, 1st graders activate prior knowledge about the components of a paragraph, then listen to the story Pumpkin, Pumpkin by Jean Titherington. Students sequence three sentences from the story using the SmartBoard. Students write a three sentence paragraph summarizing the book.

Students collaborate to compose a story. In this 3 paragraph writing lesson, students gain information about a story introduction, body, and conclusion. Students write a story introduction, then trade papers to add a "body" paragraph to a classmate's introduction, then trade a third time. Debriefing occurs following the writing process.

 

Contributions of Famous Americans; Abraham Lincoln

Students investigate U.S. history by researching Abraham Lincoln's achievements. In this Presidential biography lesson, students practice writing letters and stories explaining the accomplishments of President Lincoln during his tenure. Students collaborate in groups to present information about the Emancipation Proclamation and Slavery.
