Students read the story book, Our Class Pet, and discuss the good sides of having a pet and the responsibilities that come along with a pet. For this reading comprehension lesson, students answer discussion questions about the story and also discuss adding word endings to root words.
Students practice sorting information in order to make a graph. In this graphing lesson, students read Pet Show! by Ezra Jack Keats and bring in one of their stuffed animals. Students practice sorting their stuffed animals into number of feet, color, food eaten, movement and characteristics for use on a graph.
Third graders, by carefully studying the behavior of a live guinea pig for four days, gain direct knowledge of the guinea pig's behavior and determine if it makes a good classroom pet.

Students explore plant life by creating a plant art project. In this botany lesson plan, students utilize a pine cone and oat seeds to create the beginnings of a Chia Pet style plant. Students water their plants daily in class and observe their results after two weeks.
Students investigate exotic pets and the ecological and personal risks involved in trading and owning such animals. They synthesize their knowledge by creating advertisements that promote the sale of exotic pets and picket signs that protest their sale.
Students retell a story in sequence. In this guided reading lesson plan, students read and respond to the story, "My New Pet". Activities include sequencing and retelling the story in small groups.
Students discover how to take care of a pet. In this guided reading lesson, students read an informational text geared towards pet care. In small groups, students use the picture clues to guide research and build background knowledge. Students generate a list of words containing common suffixes.
Learners interview different teachers in their school. They decide which pet would fit best in each classroom. They share the information they gathered with the class.
Students bring in their favorite stuffed animals to class, and listen to the book, The Perfect Pet. They develop graphs for their stuffed animals, and create booklets titled, My Pet Book.
