Plant Species Lesson Plans

In the first section, young scholars will create a diorama, that includes a local habitat and shows the plants, animals, and non-living components needed to sustain the area. Students will be using their notes and learning logs for reference, as well as doing research to ensure that they have a viable habitat. In the second section, young scholars write a test. Teachers will assess the expectations using information collected from both activities.

3rd graders will participate in a variety of tasks which help them to understand the basic concepts of plant growth. Research and reporting skills are developed as they gather information from various sources related to the use of plants by humans for food, shelter and clothing, and in the production of various products.

Third graders conduct an experiment comparing plants.  In this plant lesson, 3rd graders plant seeds and grow two varieties of plant comparing the light needed for it to grow.  Students make predictions and record their observations. Students complete prediction, observation and conclusion worksheets.

Students explore the growth of plants and animals. Through research and observation, students create a habitat for specific plans and animals. As a group, they examine the similarities and differences of living things. Students identify living things as dependent or interdependent.

Students classify living things according to their characteristics and functions. They observe living things grow, move, use food, and adapt to changes around them. As the students work through the subtasks in this unit, they make connections between the natural and human effects on living species.

Students investigate the various aspects associated with living things while also concentrating on their basic needs. They explore the aspects of movement and growth in plants and animals. This is done through research and other different activities.

Learners examine why plants have both common and scientific names, then complete the activity by matching each common plant name with its scientific name. They finish by working in cooperative groups to create an ABC of Plants class book.

Third graders read several nonfiction texts and practice finding the main idea for the text as well as learn about various habitats. In this main idea lesson, 3rd graders read several nonfiction texts and make habitat cards. Students combine their cards with their classmates to make a biome description.

Fifth graders study the parts of a plant and how they live and grow. For this plant growth lesson plan, 5th graders investigate the processes that plants go through to produce oxygen and release moisture. Diagrams, images, and background information on plants are included.

Third graders complete a unit of lessons on the distinguishing characteristics of five classes of vertebrates. They differentiate between vertebrates and invertebrates, assemble a rodent skeleton, observe an experiment, and compose a poem.
