Students investigate the properties of elements and periodicity. In this periodicity lesson plan, students observe a bag of 'elements' which are different fruits and classify them in groups and periods, show the periodic relationships and show their similar physical and chemical properties. They use spectrum tubes and diffraction gratings to differentiate between elements, identify their atomic masses and show how the arrangement in the periodic table was determined.
Eighth graders explain what makes up matter. In this atoms lesson students define an atom and what its components are and identify properties of elements.
Learners research the properties of elements. They use research from the Web to identify the symbol, atomic mass, atomic number, and the number of electrons for a list of elements.
Sixth graders engage in a lesson that is about finding out information about the properties of elements. They conduct research using a variety of resources and define atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds. Students are then exposed to the Periodic Table of Elements.
Students explore the components of matter. They discover what matter is, the states of matter, and how heat and cold cause it to change states in an online format. In addition, they complete internet-based lessons, activities, and quizzes.
Students explore the six phase transitions between gases, liquids and solids for a variety of elements. Each group of students focuses on a different element, investigating its physical properties during each of the six phase transitions.
Eighth graders draw the structure of an atom. They construct atomic models, list parts/locations of an atom, organize parts of the periodic table and write a descriptive report about an element.
Eighth graders work in groups of 3-4 for this activity. They are given a sealed shoeboxes, which contains a few small items. By performing a variety of tests on the boxes, the students form hypotheses, and use deductive reasoning, on the size, shape, and identity of the objects in the box. This activitiy introduces students t the concept of atoms, and how they may have been discovered, despite their small size.
Ninth graders examine the Periodic Table. In this element lesson, 9th graders observe the chemical reactivity of elements. They graph the properties and discuss the trend in the group and period of elements. The students use math to analyze periodic trends.
Students examine the different elements on the periodic table. In this elements lesson students complete experiments and write a report.
