Students explore reading for fluency and speed. They discuss reading faster, smoother, and with more expression. Students practice reading with fluency using one minute timed reads. They read "Tin Man Fix-It." Students record how many words they read during the one minute.

Students analyze several stories and poems from Spider magazine. In this analysis lesson students demonstrate through oral response, group work, and written work their comprehension of the reading. Reading Comprehension

Complete a decoding and text comprehension activity. Sixth graders will read and discuss a list of strategies for reading and decoding unknown words. First they will read along silently with the teacher using a choral reading technique with an excerpt from the book "Achoo!" by Trudee Romanek. They then independently complete a reading comprehension worksheet.

 

11th Grade Reading Comprehension Lesson Plan--Context Vocabulary

Determine word meanings in informational text through context clues.  This lesson prompts middle schoolers to look for relationships and other clue words to find the meaning of words in passages.  They complete a handout for practice and keep a learning log of unfamiliar words from a reading assignment.

 

Third Grade Fluency Lesson

Looking for an activity to increase fluency? Third graders will practice reading comprehension by expanding their reading level. They will demonstrate for their teacher their current reading level and then decide on a goal to be reached for their reading abilities. They then explore new reading strategies in order to become more efficient. Adaptation: This activity could easily be adapted for another grade or intervention group.

Students read the January 2009 issue of Click Magazine. In this reading comprehension lesson students actively participate in the reading of the articles and stories in the magazine. The students respond to the reading in a variety of ways.

 

Detective Fiction for Remedial Readers

Eighth graders in a remedial reading class are introduced to detective fiction by Edgar Allan Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. After reading about their lives and work, they define new vocabulary and practice using a guided reading structure to read the material again. To end the instructional activity, they work together to unscramble words and match with the definition.
