Recreation Yesterday and Today

Students research entertainment and recreation in the early 20th century. In this lesson on the 1920's, students use the American Memory collections to compare the rural experience for this time period to the national experience and to their own experience. While this lesson is about recreational activities, it is also about being a teenager in the 1920s and 1930s.

 

The Effects of

Students conduct experiments on fertilized chicken embyos to determine the possible developmental effects that various recreational drugs (caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and aspirin) might have on them.

Eleventh graders research the entertainment and recreation in the early 20th century using primary sources and the book "From the Hidewood." They compare the rural experience for the time period to the national experience and to their own experience.

Students share dance moves that reflect their personalities or depict how they are feeling, explore popularity of recreational and competitive social dancing by reading and discussing the article "Follow the Flying Feet," present examples of social dancing, research dance forms performed in class, and reflect on which dance styles they like best.

Eleventh graders research entertainment and recreation in the early 20th century using the books American Memory collections and From the Hidewood:  Memories from a Dakota Neighborhood.  In this American History instructional activity, 11th graders compare the rural experience for this time period to the national experience and to their own experience.
