Sixth graders encounter the use of percentages in the real world. The lesson begins with finding sales tax and discounts on purchases. Using 10 by 10 grids, students represent percent to develop conceptual understanding of the real world applications and relate fractional parts to the percentages.
Young scholars create and give oral proposals for the construction of a gazebo using a blueprint created with Geometer's Sketchpad. They then build a gazebo model using the blueprints created and provide evidence why it should be selected for construction in 8th grade. Students in 8th grade construct the gazebo based on the selected model.
Students discuss the number line. They identify the "origin" of the number line as well as the positive and negative numbers. Students use a large number line with large numbers and arrows marked on it. Students listen as Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" is played. Students move to the left when the words indicate they should. Students discuss fraction and decimal placement on the number line.
