Fifth graders examine basic theatre vocabulary and use it to discuss a play. In this theater instructional activity, 5th graders identify the elements of a play. Students perform their play and use theatre vocabulary to explain their experience.
Explore African-American culture in this lesson, which focuses on researching literary figures. After researching Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance, middle schoolers read his play Mulatto: A Play of the Deep South. They investigate the three main characters from the play and write a reflection paper about the play, which is a good opportunity to work on literary research and evidence. You could use this lesson in an American History class as well.
Young scholars view a video about the stereotypes and discrimination in Africa. They discuss the differences between primary and secondary sources. They write an essay that analyzes the impact those sources had on other's work.
Students examine the role of tone in a comedy play. They also discover how to paraphrase a passage and explain a character's point of view.
Ninth graders identify and examine the role of prepositions and complete a text comprehension activity. In small groups they generate a list of prepositions and read a class list. Students then read and discuss a nonfiction article about plays and the origins of plays.
