This lesson has students compare and contrast school life today with that of Pennsylvania in the 1900's. In this school life lesson students create a description of a typical one-room schoolhouse. They think critically about attending school in a multi-grade one-room schoolhouse in the 1900's in Pennsylvania.
2nd graders study images of school life in the early 20th Century compared with those of today by looking at the classrooms and 2nd graders' dress. They create a Venn diagram and write a paragraph based on their observations.
Students examine school life during the 1930s. They discuss the Great Depression and the New Deal, examine and discuss photographs from the Library of Congress website, and complete a worksheet about school life during the Great Depression.
