A World of Taste--Louisiana Gumbo

Young scholars discover the multicultural contributions to New Orleans gumbo through participation in cross curriculum activities. In this multicultural diversity and New Orleans history instructional activity, students shade regions of a map according to a color code representing the countries that contributed ingredients to the gumbo recipe. Young scholars listen to jazz and creole folk tales. Students follow a gumbo recipe and write a critique of this "melting pot" dish as if they were a food critic.

 

Mangrove Loss Faster than Land-Based Forests

Students explore the reasons Mangrove forests are in jeopardy.  In this lesson, students read an article that discusses specific facts on Mangrove forests, then complete numerous activities that reinforce the information, such as taking a quiz, listing the advantages and disadvantages of mangroves, completing a simulation activity and writing an email on the topic.
