Learners discuss physical places in which had good or bad acoustics. After reading an article, they discover the relationship between the physics of sound and concert hall acoustics. They calculate the speed of sound and compare their results with the scientific standards. They also examine the relationship between the speed of sound and concert hall acoustics variables.
Students observe a variety of sounds which can be heard within their schoolyard habitat by sitting quietly by themselves for five minutes, listening, and then recording the sounds around them by drawing them.
Second graders create a variety of sounds and recognize that vibration causes sound. In this sound lesson, students read books about sound and create tin can telephones, spoon sounds, a musical box and sound in bottles. Students complete worksheets
Learners learn that vibration makes different types of sounds. In this sound instructional activity, students perform experiments to understand vibrations and high and low pitch sounds. Learners learn that sound travels differently through different states of matter. Students performance is assessed through 4 tasks they must accomplish.
Students perform three experiments to gain understanding of how pitch changes. In this sound lesson, students create a variety of sounds with different pitches. Students will record their data as the observe the differences in the sounds produced. Students make inferences about how pitch changes.
Students rotate through a series of stations and work with a partner to observe sound waves. They describe sound in terms of pitch, volume and frequency and then consider how these observations can help people who cannot hear or talk.
Students read the first chapter of William Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury." They discuss the text, create reading journals and analyze the character of Benjy.
Students identify sources and importance of sound, discuss sounds heard on way to school, explain why sound waves can be "seen", and participate in various classroom activities and experiments that illustrate how sound travels.
Fifth graders explore and examine the basic properties of sound. In pairs, they speak through a balloon and listen to the sound vibrations, and listen to a ticking clock or watch through a variety of materials and identify the differences in volume. They also participate in a string and hanger demonstration, and observe a tuning fork in water.
Students explore the concept of sound. In this sound lesson, students explore different sounds and the objects that create them. Students will discover, through several hands-on activities, what vibration, pitch, and amplitude is.
