Exploitation, Day 2: Exploitation and Getting Help

Exploitation is a real issue for the disabled community. Secondary Special Education students learn what exploitation is, their personal rights, and how to say no. They focus on finding a trusted adult to get help if they have been taken advantage of. Such an important lesson. Intended for students with moderate developmental disabilities.

 

Environmental Awareness and Children's Literature

Use an alternative setting for pregnant teens and young mothers, as well as special education children to examine environmental topics through literature. Included in this unit is a visit to neighborhood libraries to select children's books on the environment. Through reading and research, students work together to create an original book.

 

Learning Through Autobiographical Situations

A special education classroom examines a variety of literature from Latin American authors. In groups, they read excerpts from many autobiographies and compare them with their own life. After writing their own autobiographies, they role-play the life of one of the autobiographies they read during the lesson.

 

Using Poetry in Teaching Reading to Special Education Students

A perfect series of well written activities, this lesson plan prompts middle schoolers reading at a 2nd - 4th grade level to use poetry to practice basic reading skills. They rhyme, build words, make inferences, and practice phonics skills. There are three lessons total and an extensive rational/context commentary. The lesson plan is appropriate for older students as well.

Using the internet, they gather information either supporting or disagreeing with the idea of taking a life by euthanasia. They explore how the German government decided who was worthy of life and the facts of the T4 program.

Special Education Fitness Challenge

Make fitness a part of each and every day. Special Ed learners are given charts with maps and record keeping information. They are given a 20-week period (late October to late March, when the weather is cool enough) to walk that designated distance.

Cardio-Vascular Endurance

Students in a special education class work to improve their endurance. As a class, they complete the same exercises at the beginning of each class trying to increase the number of reps. They are also introduced to healthy eating habits and discuss the importance of eating certain items in moderation.
