First graders engage in spelling practice activities neede to master the spelling of words in the six lessons of this unit. The knowledge of basic spelling patterns and the rules that are used to help spell words correctly are emphasized in the lessons.
Students play a fast-paced game to review spelling words. This quick spelling practice game can fill a 2-minute transition time or serve as a 20-minute review activity. It can be used in a class which has the same, or different spelling lists.
Student practice their spelling words as a class. Using a software program, they identify their words in a complete sentence. At the end of the lesson, they print out their work and review the words again. They define the words on their spelling list as well.
Third graders participate in oral activities to remember spelling words. In this spelling lesson, 3rd graders participate in orally spelling the words using different sounds for consonant and vowels. Students repeat spelling different parts of the words. Students receive points for correct spellings.

They work with words that have k or c sounds in the phonics portion. Next they review the first stanza of the poem "White Fields" and examine the second. Ninth graders examine the VC/V syllable pattern, and write a cinquain. They divide a list of words into syllables and place the accent in the correct place. Next, they define cinquain, read and write examples of cinquain poems, and discuss the patterns in the poems.
Students record book reading and practice spelling and vocabulary on this free online reading-log site. In this lesson, students work online to complete reading logs. Students are assigned 30 minutes a night in reading.
