Fifth graders work in pairs to define synonyms. In this synonym instructional activity students search flash cards to find a synonym partner. Students chart pairs of synonyms on a synonym tree.
Students examine the concept of synonyms and how using a variety of vocabulary through synonyms can expand their writing skills. They revise a paragraph using synonyms located on the Visual Thesaurus, and participate in a "Synonym Charades" game, rewriting original book and movie titles using synonyms.
Fifth graders create synonym trees by writing their main word on the tree trunk and gluing synonym words to represent the leaves. For this synonyms lesson plan, 5th graders play a class game where they must find a partner who has a synonym that matches the word they have on an index card. Then, students create their trees; which are displayed in class once completed. Good lesson!
The identification of synonyms and antonyms is the focus of this language arts lesson. Third graders receive direct instruction on what synyonyms and antonyms are, then play an engaging game where they must match up with students who are wearing words that are synonyms or antonyms of the words they are wearing. Fine instructions on how to play the game are embedded in the plan.
