Young scholars understand how a spell checker is used with a word processing program. In this spell checking lesson, students use the spell checker to correct a document with errors created by the teacher.
Students explore various tools of technology to construct and illustrate a story. In this technology/writing lesson, students work with a partner to brainstorm and draft a story based on personal experience. Students use computer skills that combine text, images, and voice recording to create a final draft of their story.
Have your class inquire about learning disabilities by identifying their own capabilities. They discuss their interests and hobbies and identify that not everyone has the same skill set now or anytime in the future. They listen as the teacher reads a book which discusses autism and human understanding.
Students investigate the tools and technology used in ocean exploration. They participate in a simulated ocean exploration trip, take samples from a simulated ocean, complete dive logs, and analyze the results.
Seventh graders use Internet to familiarize themselves with variety of stone tools used by early man, create information chart describing each tool and its purpose, and discuss why tools have survived thousands of years.
Students view examples of copper tooling. They create a sketch the size of their copper. Students tape the top and bottom of the sketch to their copper and place a stack of newspaper under the copper. They trace all lines of their sketch with a ball point pen to transfer the design. Fifth graders create fraction tool kits to find equivalent fractions and convert between fractions and mixed numbers. In small groups they create the fraction tool kits, and using the kits play four different fraction related games, including fraction equivalent bingo.
Fourth graders create and use fraction tool kits to play a variety of fraction-based games. Using the fraction kits and a die they match fractions, play equivalent fraction bingo, and convert an improper fraction to a whole number or a mixed number. Students also complete practice worksheets.
Fifth graders create fraction tool kits to identify equivalent fractions and convert between fractions and mixed numbers. In small groups they construct their tool kits, and with a partner play a variety of games involving fractions. Students also play Bingo Equivalent Fractions and complete a worksheet.
Sixth graders create fraction tool kits to find equivalent fractions and convert between fractions and mixed numbers. Using their fraction tool kits, they rotate through a variety of fraction centers in small groups and play equivalent fraction bingo.
