You Have a Way With Words

The Wordle website is accessed by pupils in order to create complimentary pieces of writing about their classmates. Each person types their name in ten times, and the other people type in complimentary words about that person. Posters are printed out and displayed in the class for all to enjoy. This would be a fabulous activity to do before Back to School Night, so parents could see the posters about their children.

Students watch the Discovery video "The Ancient World" and discuss the Fertile Crescent and why people migrated there in ancient times. The class pretends they live in ancient times and are migrating to the Fertile Crescent or beyond and write a letter to a friend that has chosen to stay behind. They research useful websites for additional facts.

 

Comparing Books to 13th Century Manuscripts

Students compare modern-day books to manuscripts from the 13th century. In this comparative literature lesson, students observe various manuscripts and resources from given links. Websites and links are included along with extension activities.

 

Colonial History: Fearless and faaithful

Young scholars discuss reasons why early europeans immigrated to North America. Working in groups, they complete Internet activities on the PBS Website. They take a simulated voyage to the new world and rercord their actions on worksheets. Then they role-play as colonists writing letters home or making journal entries.

All About Computers

Students work in groups to conduct Internet research on a topic of their choice. Groups visit at least three websites while researching and use the information they for a presentation to share with the rest of the class. They practice appropriate documenting in their presentations.

 

Measure for Measure: Time & Temperature

Students discuss the steps of scientific inquiry then develop a template to solve a problem using the steps of scientific inquiry. Groups choose from a list of problems and examine websites to find necessary information on each of the topics. Groups share their findings with the remainder of the class.

 

Examine popular language and slang and how they have changed over the course of American history. Conduct Internet research, use an online interactive Colonial House website to translate 17th century language into 21st century language, and write 17th century text.
