Students complete activities to study the traveling Jewish theatre and the ideas of tolerance. In this theatre study lesson, students read information about the Traveling Jewish Theatre and learn about the project to unit artists from the US and the Middle East, Jews and Muslims, and Israelis and Palestinians. Students complete several activities to learn how theatre can help students explore important social issues.
Fourth graders participate in a reading of "Peddler Polly and the Story Stealer" by Aaron Shepard in the form of a reader's theater script. They discuss how to decode unknown words when reading, and read the script. A rubric for checking reading fluency is included.
Fifth graders examine phonics expectancies and participate in a reader's theater activity. They examine expectancies using visual clues, discuss example words and match open and closed syllable expectancy. Next, they participate in a reader's theater reading of "The Legend of Lightning Larry" by Aaron Shepard.
Sixth graders research musical styles and forms throughout history. In this musical styles and forms lesson, 6th graders research the history of music by examining the similarities and differences in the form of opera and American musical theatre. Students then create their own opera or musical theatre production for their class.

Young scholars learn what characteristics embody documentary theater and explore the use of theater as a medium to express controversial perspectives.
Students study satirical and political theatre to learn how performing arts can be used for social change. In this theatre study lesson, students read about satirical theatre and create art from issues they see in their own lives. Students complete several activities to study the political theatre.
Students become familiar with each member of the tenor trio: Cook, Dixon and Young. They conduct research and then create a television segment based on their findings. Students identify a variety of musical genres and explore the contributions of each type of music.
Fifth graders participate in a reader's theater activity using readings that are downloaded from the Internet.In this lesson, they use the story entitled, "Peddler Polly Goods Bought and Sold There." They move around the stage using gestures and movement that is appropriate for the reading.
Fifth graders participate in a reader's theater exercise of Aaron Shepard's, "Peddler Polly and the Story Stealer." They perform parts of the story using simple prop and scripts. They are evaluated using the fluency rubric that accompanies the instructional activity.
Sixth graders participate in a Reader's Theater experience of The Legend of Lightening Larry. They use the script and the classroom performing area to put the script into action. They take the part of a character in the story and attempt to give it life by using gestures and movements.
