Eighth graders take a quiz to review the different objects in space. As a class, they define terms related to galaxies. In groups, they make a model of the Milky Way galaxy using materials provided to them by their teacher. To end the lesson, they describe the three types of galaxies.
Tenth graders explore the structure and content of galaxies. Through discussion, lab, and hands-on activities, they discover the general structure of the three types of galaxies as well as the effect they have on the structure and function of the universe. Two lessons are included.
Students practice skills used in scientific investigation while studying the three main types of galaxies. Students identify Earth as part of Milky Way galaxy, the parts of galaxies, and the types of galaxies, as well as classify galaxies by size and shape in a computer game.
Eighth graders explore the galaxies and define related vocabulary words. From given pictures of galaxies, 8th graders classify irregular, spiral or elliptical galaxies. In groups, students make a model of the Milky Way, define vocabulary worsds.
Young scholars define astronomy as the science that involves space and all the bodies in it. They identify the unit used to measure distances in space. They name three types of galaxies.
Third graders complete a month-long unit of lessons on astronomy. They examine the basic components of the solar system, complete a handout booklet, define key vocabulary, create a galaxy glitter drawing, write paragraphs, and view demonstrations.
Students are able to analyze sampling methods for bias. They are able to take a simple random sample to draw conclusions from the data and use sample variability to determine optimal sample size. Students compare sample data with the population parameter to determine accuracy of sampling techniques.
Students analyze a designated galaxy with a partner or in a small group.
Young scholars expand their galactic knowledge by visiting Internet Websites to classify objects in the Hubble Deep Field Image. They discover how to use representative sampling to estimate the number of galaxies in the universe. In groups, they conduct stellar statistician and cosmic classifier activities located on the Hubble Deep Field Academy Website
Fourth graders explore space science. In this space exploration lesson, 4th graders investigate the tools that engineers use to examine the solar system. Students analyze the history of the stud of the solar system.
