Modeling the Solar System

Learners construct a scale model of the solar system in a long hallway or playing field. They discuss the fact that most of the solar system is empty space, and that outer planets are much farther apart than inner planets. They also talk about how long it takes to travel through the solar system.

Once in a Blue Moon (Number Systems and Number Theory)

Students review the order of the planets from the sun and use the data to create a human solar system. Pupils are assigned the name of a planet, and physically demonstrate the orbits and the time it takes for each of the planets to revolve around the sun.

Astronomy: The Mathematician's Perspective

Young scholars determine measurements and distances using trigonometric ratios. In this astronomy lesson students demonstrate the difference between a positive and negative slope using the Pythagorean Theorem.

Solar System Hoppers

Student map a path through the Solar System using facts about the planets. Working with a partner, they play a game and assume the roles of Tour Guide and Visitor. They sit back-to-back with a Map and Destination Information and the Tour Guide prepares a tour for their partner using only clues from the Destination sheet. Visitors guess where to go and try to make it to the correct final destination.

Making Models of the Solar System

Students discover our Solar System by creating miniature models.  In this space science lesson plan, students utilize a clothesline, construction paper and clothespins to recreate the solar system within their classroom.  Students create a drawing of the Solar System they can bring home and study.

Aurora Recipes

Students explore the conditions needed for an aurora curve to exist and determine if any other planet may experience auroras. In this meteorology lesson, students identify what is necessary for an aurora to occur, review facts about planets in the solar system, then determine if any planets are capable of experiencing auroras.

Planetary Magnetic Fields

Students use teacher constructed "planets" and test their magnetic field. They hold the planet hear the compa"equator." Students rotate the planet and observe the effect on the compass. They move the planet above the compass and repeat the experiment.

Space Science: Locating Voyager 6

Sixth graders, in groups, create fact sheets about a lost space craft. Using data charts and additional compiled information, other teams of students attempt to locate the craft based on the clues given. In groups, 6th graders compile lists of each planet's characteristics.

Making Models of the Solar System

Students make several models of the solar system to learn the positions of the planets in the solar system as well as relative distances and sizes. They create several models of the solar system and identify the planets by size, shape, color, features, and position in the solar system. Students also practice key vocabulary words and ask and answer specific questions.

Earth's Magnetic Field and Magnetosphere

Students investigate the magnitude of Earth's magnetic field using PASCO. In this physics lesson, students describe the features of the magnetosphere. They explain how atmosphere layers protect the Earth.
