Valence electrons Lesson Plans

Ninth graders investigate ionic bonding through energy level diagrams. In this ion bonding lesson plan, 9th graders observe demonstrations to show energy level diagrams using magnets to represent the subatomic particles. Students fill the energy levels of sodium and chlorine using the magnets and visually see the valence electrons and how bonding between the two atoms occurs. Students take notes about ions and observe conductivity in ionic compounds.

Learners write electron configuration of elements using atomic numbers and they identify valence electrons. In this electrons lesson plan, students observe a demonstration showing the space-filling property of an electron. They also observe an orbital filling diagram on the board and write electron configurations of given atoms.

Eighth graders act out the role of atoms by dressing up as the atoms of designated elements. They explain the difference between an atom and an ion and explain the role of valence electrons.

Students write the electron configuration of elements in the ground state. For this chemistry lesson, students draw how subatomic particles are arranged in the atom. They construct Lewis dot diagrams of valence electrons.

Students determine the number of valence electrons using energy level diagrams, then explain why elements lose or gain electrons during ionic bonding. They define an ion, write correct ion notation, and describe some properties of ionic compounds.

Students examine the periodic table and explore modern atomic theory. They explore gain experiences with scientific principles. As a class, students observe and particpate in procedures to examine orbitals, diagram and electron configurations, ionization, valence electrons and chemical properties.

Students write electron configurations and identify groups.  In this investigative lesson students use valence electrons to draw electron dot structures. 

Students write the electron configuration of any element, given the atomic number. Given the location of an element on the periodic table, they give the highest energy level the valence electrons are on.

Students research the elements used to create fireworks. In this periodic table lesson, students discuss common metals, their characteristics, and their places on the periodic table. They work in small groups to research the elements used in fireworks and create a mural relating the elements and the fireworks.

Students explore atoms, atom components, elements, and the periodic table. They make a model of a particular atom out of a cookie, icing, and different colored sprinkles and completed a worksheet.
