Vincent Van Gogh Lesson Plans

Students work with and identify the color yellow and who was the painter Vincent van Gogh. They identify van Gogh's painting, "Sunflowers," and identify how van Gogh used wiggly lines and liked to glob on the paint. Students also make reproduction of van Gogh's "Sunflowers," and recognize the yellow in the sunflowers.

6th graders conduct research-based inquiry projects. In this Vincent van Gogh lesson, 6th graders collect information regarding van Gogh's painting techniques and consider how artists get inspiration for their own artwork.

Students recognize and discuss the works of Vincent Van Gogh. In this Vincent Van Gogh lesson, students take part in a lecture lesson about the life of Van Gogh and his masterpiece, "Sunflowers." They listen to Don McLean's song and draw pictures of sunflowers. Finally, they plant sunflower seeds.

5th graders create an oil painting and describe the benefits of using oil. They describe the life, works and methods of Vincent Van Gogh.

Students examine the tragic life and career of Vincent Van Gogh. Plagued by madness and depression, Van Gogh nevertheless produced revolutionary works of art that are worth millions today.

Learners conduct research on the life and artwork of Vincent Van Gogh. They explore various websites, answer research questions and write a paragraph about the information found online, and discuss as a class what makes Van Gogh's paintings unique.

Learners revisit the color yellow and are introduced to van Gogh, the painter. In this visual arts lesson, learners study Vincent van Gogh's painting "Sunflowers" and identify the color yellow. Learners create their own interpretation of the painting and incorporate the color yellow.

6th graders explore the works and different type of art painted by Vincent Van Gogh.  In this Van Gogh lesson, 6th graders recognize characteristics of Van Gogh's work and identify his self portrait. 6th graders assemble puzzle pieces to put this portrait together and discuss elements of his life and his art.

In this lesson learners will create a hanging ornament in the style of Vincent van Gogh. In this project learners will learn about Vincent van Gogh's painting techniques and work individually. Each student will interpret a van Gogh work into 3-D using Model Magic. In this lesson learners will also use the coil building technique to create their relief sculpture.

7th graders research the life of Vincent Van Gogh, paint a color wheel and use it to examine Van Gogh's color choices. They practice drawing proportions of the face and create self-portraits using color and texture techniques used by Van Gogh.
