Students research infectious diseases, focusing on what scientists and journalists currently do and do not know about each one. They act as scientists or journalists as they find out more about a particular infectious disease.
Students demonstrate knowledge of important advances in microbiology by creating a timeline of microbiological milestones. Student also demonstrate application of the many milestones in microbiology by researching and reporting on the current work being done by microbiologists. Each student researchers a microbiologist and use their findings to create a piece of the class microbiology timeline.
Students examine the human population response to microbial diseases. In this disease lesson students observe population trends, write about a scientist and evaluate and defend current treatments for infectious diseases.
Students grow bacteria and/or fungi from a variety of locations and compare the results. In this microbe identification instructional activity, students discover that microbes are everywhere and some readily grow on sources of food and water through experimenting with bacteria grown in Petri dishes.
Students study germ defense. In this germ defense lesson plan, student read an article entitled, "Germ Defense." They read in groups and discuss the article as a whole class. They complete a crossword puzzle using information from the article.
Research the science behind commonly used cold medicines. The class reads an article, create a product poster, and conduct independent research on product claims made by medicine companies regarding cold medicines.
Seventh graders research the effect that viruses have on their everyday life. They examine how scientific advertising affects their health. They compose an essay evaluating an advertisement for scientific accuracy and present to class.
Students are organized into groups of four. On Day 1 they are given a worksheet about viruses and their effects on the evolution of a rabbit population. After about 30 minutes of group work, a class discussion of the material begins. On Day 2 they finish their group discussion and each team or group is assigned a research topic. After groups are organized and all questions answered, students begin the research process.
Students test the factors that influence the rate at which a virus spreads through a population. They complete a lab activity then discuss data collected and review and answer a set of questions.
Students gather information about the H1N1 virus, and share this information. For this pandemic lesson students read about Influenza A, or Swine Flu, compile information on the disease, and then present their findings to the class.
