Students explore their physical abilities by participating in a sport. In this volleyball lesson, students discover the different techniques and skills needed to play volleyball by moving from different stations with small groups. Students utilize the different skill-set they practiced to play a game of volleyball as a class.
Fifth graders participate in a game of blanket volleyball. In this sports lesson, 5th graders are divided into two teams and each have a blanket. Students catch the ball in the blanket and throw the ball by lifting the blanket.
Fourth graders examine the sport of volleyball. In this volleyball history instructional activity, 4th graders discover how volleyball began. Students view a sideshow and understand the physical benefits playing volleyball brings.
Students identify what a volleyball looks like and how it is used appropriately. They are introduced to eye-hand coordination exercises by using balloons and gradually working up to using a volleyball. Next, students study the appropriate way to receive and return a volleyball. They identify the proper equipment needed to play the game, the proper height of the volleyball net, and the rules and regulations of the game.
Students observe and demonstrate the key skills of volleyball. They discuss the game and rules of volleyball, and in two teams play a modified game of volleyball using a beach ball. Students keep score and try to keep the beach ball in the air and score the most points for their team.
Students create an artistic promotional poster to assess retained knowledge of volleyball terms used during volleyball unit.
Pupils work together as a team and promote ball control with the feet. The game also reinforces basic volleyball rules.
Students review the volleyball pass, set, serve, and volleyball footwork. They pass the ball from 8-10 feet away from the wall and aim for the rings. They pass 5 balls to the wall and no matter if they make it into the hoops or not, set the ball down at the station and rotate to station 2.
Fifth graders observe and demonstrate basic volleyball skills by participating in a volleyball clinic. In small groups, they rotate around to different volleyball stations, observing and demonstrating setting, forearm pass, overhand serving, and spiking techniques.
