I have used several hands-on lessons that have helped to engage my students in topics that may have been mundane to them. I do not have a text book or resources for many of the topics that I teach, and it is nice to find so many resources in one place.

Students focus on stellar luminosities to estimate size of habitable zones, map out habitable zone around hot light bulbs that serve as models of stars, investigate how size of model "habitable zone" around light bulbs depends on wattage of bulb, and transfer information to discuss habitable zones around real stars. Students then draw some conclusions about probability of finding planets within star's habitable zone.
Students study the three zones of the open ocean. In this ocean lesson, students research the three zones of the open ocean, identify the different types of animals in each zone, and write a descriptive paragraph based on their research. They listen to "Sea Creatures" as the teacher reads it using the digital projector, complete independent Internet research, and use a rubric as they write a their descriptive paragraphs.
Learners read and discuss the Enemy Alien Evacuation Order. They perform research by reading newspaper articles from February 1942 as well as investigating available information on the Internet. Students work in groups to create a dramatization of a given situation related to the Evacuation Order. They select sides (for or against) over creating a prohibited zone for enemy aliens and participate in a debate of the issue.
Students study five of the seven life zones in North America. In this journalism lesson students use the Scientific Method working in teams. They use lab equipment and technology to create a presentation on five of the seven life zones in North America.
Students begin their examination of the climate zones found around the world. Using a software program, they identify the relationship between the vegetation, climate and temperatures of the different zones. They also plot coordinates using latitude and longitude.
Students participate in an activity in which they explore the various zones of the ocean. They clean up a mock oil spill and discuss the effects an oil spill has on each of the ocean zones.
Students examine what causes low oxygen conditions that produce the "Dead Zone" in the Gulf of Mexico. They analyze data, conduct research, develop a hypothesis, and design an experiment to test their hypothesis.
Students explore intertidal zones. In this intertidal zones lesson, students work in small groups and use ready-made materials to create a model of intertidal zones. Resources are provided.
Students work their way out of circular maze, modeling movement of photon as it travels through radiative zone of sun, record problem solving processes they used, discuss Standard Solar Model and its importance in further scientific studies of sun, and create model for path of photon in sun's radiative zone.
Students investigate climate zones. In this research lesson, students gather information about the plants, animals and weather of a specific climate. Students use the information to create an educational brochure.
