Students study symbolism as they research the flag of a particular country and create a presentation about the symbolism in the flag. They create an original flag that represents their class, school, city or other organization.

Students work together to create a timeline of the history of the American flag. They attach pictures of presidents, flags and other illustrations. They create the timeline in red, white and blue to represent the flag itself.

Students describe how symbolism is used in flags as they research the symbolism in country flags and create a new flag design. They begin investigating the meaning behind the Olympic flag and then continue with the flags of South Africa and the US.

Students compare flags, locate states on map with flag picture or miniature. Read a newspaper article outlining five vexillology standards for rating flags. They develop a personal flag with an essay interpreting their flag to the reader.

Students are divided into groups with each person in the group reading part of the story about the flag to the other members of the group. They then use a dictionary to write definitions for at least three bold words making sure that each word is defined by at least one member of the group.
