Students, in cooperative learning groups, read books written by Laura Numeroff and analyze the author's style with the use of a semantic web. They practice word processing skills using Write On Plus, Writing With Picture Books.

Students conduct Internet research about the studenT author and illustrator Patricia Polacco. They compose letters to Ms. Polacco and, after revising and editing their work, send them in the mail.

Students evaluate one author's writing by creating a web page to present all the aspects of the Author Contract. They compare and contrast the four books from one author by creating a chart to present the styles and themes of these books.

Students participate in an classroom visit from a author who describes the process of writing a book. They follow the writing process with revisions and publish their works into classroom book. They participate in a Literature Fair.

Students identify and interpret the background and practice in determining authority on the Internet. Then they identify how to tell whether an author has expertise or not, and whether they're getting the straight story. Students also identify and apply techniques to assist them in determining authority when searching on the Internet.
