Students review and research phonics rules. In teams, students research a group of phonics rules and words that correspond to those rules. They construct a class word wall which shows their rules and phonics examples.

Students participate in an auditory discrimination review session to begin the literacy block. Next, they practice using their phonics skills to spell given words using the SAS method. In the text comprehension section, they compare and contrast two of Aesop's fables. Finally, they recite all of the poems they know.

Students participate in a phonics expectancies activity and read and discuss a short reading passage. They view and discuss phonics expectancies visual clues, and create a poster of the visual clues. Next, they read the passage "Winter Embroidery" and mark up the text and discuss what they marked with the class.

Students read and examine phonics expectancies and participate in a text comprehension activity. They create a poster of visual graphics that represent different phonics expectancies, then read a passage together and create a keyword outline.

Students brainstorm together as a class a list of words to describe a blue piece of paper. They observe how the teacher has placed words in different columns ending on beginning letter sounds/ blends. They review different blends and work in the computer lab on "Phonics" program to practice blending sounds.
