Students review the estimation of quantities less than 100 through literature and small group activities. The book Betcha! Estimating by Stuart J. Murphy is required.

Students investigate methods of estimating through cooperative group activities, hands-on activities, the use of tables and graphs and an interactive video.

Students practice estimation skills with the video series "Interactions: Real Math, Real Careers". They complete a hands-on activity for estimating large numbers.

6th - 8th

Students practice their estimation skills by observing different objects then making their best guess without using measuring instruments. Students are asked to estimate mass, length, volume, and area.

5th - 8th

Students use paper and pencil to make a list of the food they want to buy. Choices are listed on the board, each student may "spend" $10. After students estimate the food they can buy, they add up the costs of their choices to see how close they are. Students should try to spend as close to $10 as they can without going over.
