Students practice their ability to work with fractions in real life situations. They bring in a recipe from home, and must recalculate the amounts of the ingredients based on how many students there are in the class.

Students add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. They "fish" for and solve a number of fraction problems requiring adding, subtracting, finding equivalent fractions, and using mixed numbers.

Students distinguish between proper and improper fractions. They create a "Character Clue Box" that represents a fraction. Fractions are picked from a hat and then groups go outside and search for items that represent their fraction. They take 6 pictures and then put them into a powerpoint for others to figure out the fraction they had.

Students convert fractions and decimals to percents. Using measuring cups, students model fraction/percent equivalents. They discuss how to change a decimal to a percent. Using the white boards, students review the different ways to present the same number.

Students make use of a visual representation for dividing fractions. They also discover the numerical algorithm used to divide fractions. Then, students develop and analyze algorithms for computing with fractions, decimals, and integers and develop fluency in their use.
