Students explore geometric building blocks in the real world in order to describe the characteristics and relationships of points, lines, line segments, rays, and planes. This is the first lesson plan in a series of lessons in geometry.

Students review the parts of a circle, calculate the circumference and area of a circle, and create student-made tests on the geometry of circles using educational software.

Students initiate the process of creating ten images based on specific criteria for a geometry portfolio project. Working in groups, students brainstorm various ways to create and edit their images using an image editing program. A mock up of their work is completed for approval.

Students read about the background of geometry in general to tap prior knowledge of the fundamentals. Then they use an application activity of measuring that is online and interactive for the student.

Students participate in an activity known as toothpick geometry. Individually, they form different shapes by moving toothpicks into the correct formation. They complete a worksheet and review their answers with the class to end the lesson.
