Students gather data from their own lives to use in calculating percents. They measure parts of their bodies, complete a class survey that asks information about themselves, and use a pay stub to find percentages of deductions.

Students watch a PBS video about fractions, percents and decimals. They fill in fraction circles and rename them in decimals and percents. They visit and interact on a fractions, decimals and percents website and solve problems.

Students explore math concepts of percent and interest through research on Chinese New Year and the traditions of the holiday.

Students explore percents. After a teacher demonstration, students practice adding and subtracting percents. They also change percents to decimals and decimals to percents. As a class, students practice reading the problem and using problem solving skills.

7th - 9th

Students use the percent of change formula to discover the amount of dirt on their hands before and after washing them. After tracing their hands on grid paper, students use a "dirt indicator" to find the amount of dirt on their hands and record the information. Next, they wash their hands, retest them, trace their hands and indicate the location of the remaining dirt. Students then find the change of percent between the two tests.
