Students find information about primes on the Internet. They use directions for Sieve of Eratosthenes to find primes in the first 100 numbers. After a lecture/demo, students access a website imbedded in this plan to explore prime numbers.

Students examine and discuss prime numbers, composite numbers, and prime factorization. They develop and create a factor tree mobile using exponents.

Students solve problems by choosing strategies, explaining their reasoning, making calculations, and checking results. They are given a hundreds chart, students find all the prime numbers up to 100. Students work in groups of three or four to find other rules for identifying composite numbers.

Students listen to instruction concerning prime numbers observing examples that the teacher gives. They then answer questions asked by the teacher to check for understanding such as: "What are the first five multiples of 5?". Next they copy the order of operations table in their journal and discover the reasons why they must be followed.
