Glossaries and Indexes

Fourth graders identify parts of a book including the glossary, index, and dedication. In this glossary and index instructional activity, 4th graders complete a worksheet after studying the glossary and index from a Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook.

Parts of a Book

In this recognizing information in the Table of Contents and Index worksheet, learners refer to the table of contents and index provided to help answer questions. Students write 5 answers.

Word Search Y4 6 x table

In this math word search worksheet, students find the 6 x table answer in the number square and circle them. They then complete the 10 sums at the bottom of the page. The answers are on the second page.

Smiling at Two Digit Multiplication!

How do I solve a two-digit multiplication problem? Your class tackles this question by walking through problem solving methods. They first investigates and applies traditional multiplication methods, and they then compare those with lattice multiplication and partial products multiplication. Resources are provided.

2 Times Tables

Third graders count, multiply, and color their way to success. Not only do they practice multiplying two by various numbers, they color in a table to fully understand the two-times table, as well as counting sets of two ears on different groups of animals. A fun worksheet for all!

Animal Report (Lesson 5 - Location and Access - Grade 4)

Fourth graders practice finding answers to various questions using the Table of Contents and Index of a sample resource book. They complete a practice worksheet.

Take Service Learning Online

Fourth graders research ways to use technology to raise awareness for refugee camps and the conflict in Darfur. In this world conflict and technology activity, 4th graders work in groups as researchers, writers, and artists to create a website that helps other students learn about the conflict in Darfur. Students integrate a podcast, write letters, write Darfur reflections, given related links, and include biography information for the activity.

Under the Sea

Students explore the sea. For this sea lesson, students fill out KWL charts and read non-fiction books about the sea. Students find and use the table of contents, index, and glossary. Students sort ocean animals into different categories according to their ecosystem.

Kids Helping Kids

Learners experience reading in a multi-age learning community. For this partner reading lesson, students plan and implement a "Reading Buddy" program. Learners practice oral reading, select sight vocabulary to "teach" the younger student, and reflect on the experience in a learning log.

Using the 2 Times Tables

If your third graders have a hard time with multiplication, visualizing the problems might help. Six problems show learners how to count pairs of boxes to solve multiplication with the two times table. At the end, they draw boxes to represent the given equations. Use the resource as a quiz or homework assignment.
