Fourth graders use two separate sources to learn about index, glossary, and table of contents usage. In this library lesson, 4th graders use two books, Learning About Weather with Graphic Organizers, and The World Almanac for Kids, to complete activities focused on using the glossary, index, and table of contents.

Glossaries and Indexes

Fourth graders identify parts of a book including the glossary, index, and dedication. In this glossary and index lesson, 4th graders complete a worksheet after studying the glossary and index from a Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook.

Parts of a Book

In this recognizing information in the Table of Contents and Index worksheet, learners refer to the table of contents and index provided to help answer questions. Students write 5 answers.

Smiling at Two Digit Multiplication!

How do I solve a two-digit multiplication problem? Your class tackles this question by walking through problem solving methods. They first investigates and applies traditional multiplication methods, and they then compare those with lattice multiplication and partial products multiplication. Resources are provided.

Word Search Y4 6 x table

In this math word search worksheet, students find the 6 x table answer in the number square and circle them. They then complete the 10 sums at the bottom of the page. The answers are on the second page.

Take Service Learning Online

Fourth graders research ways to use technology to raise awareness for refugee camps and the conflict in Darfur. In this world conflict and technology lesson plan, 4th graders work in groups as researchers, writers, and artists to create a website that helps other students learn about the conflict in Darfur. Students integrate a podcast, write letters, write Darfur reflections, given related links, and include biography information for the lesson plan.

2 Times Tables

Third graders count, multiply, and color their way to success. Not only do they practice multiplying two by various numbers, they color in a table to fully understand the two-times table, as well as counting sets of two ears on different groups of animals. A fun worksheet for all!

Animal Report (Lesson 5 - Location and Access - Grade 4)

Fourth graders practice finding answers to various questions using the Table of Contents and Index of a sample resource book. They complete a practice worksheet.

Kids Helping Kids

Students experience reading in a multi-age learning community. In this partner reading lesson, students plan and implement a "Reading Buddy" program. Students practice oral reading, select sight vocabulary to "teach" the younger student, and reflect on the experience in a learning log.

Under the Sea

Learners explore the sea. In this sea lesson, students fill out KWL charts and read non-fiction books about the sea. Learners find and use the table of contents, index, and glossary. Students sort ocean animals into different categories according to their ecosystem.

Community Table-Community Ties: The Drive

Students explore the concept of philanthropy. In this service learning lesson, students consider the issues of hunger and homelessness. Students explore literature dealing with the topics and brainstorm ways they may be able to help others.
