Even though the student handouts are not included in the write-up, this instructional activity contains the instructions for terrific activities to use when teaching middle schoolers about metamorphic rocks. First, they compare granite to gneiss and notice the striations. Then they create a model using clay and toothpicks to discover how the striations are produced. They also examine a set of five metamorphic rocks and find other identifying characteristics. Finally, they determine what type of rock each was formed from.
