Surveying: 19 Chains and 50 Links

Through an interdisciplinary instructional activity, emerging engineers explore the history of surveying systems. After discussing various systems, they perform surveys on printable pages. Using their geometric skills, they physically stake out plots and use protractors to find correct angles. In a social studies application, they discuss problems that may have occurred when surveying land in the 1800s. Note that the plethora of Common Core standards listed by the publisher may take some extra thought to actually address through this instructional activity.
