Tilt down allotment visitor to rows of spinach\u003cbr/\u003eWith food prices increasing, and the interest in organic food farming growing, more and more people in the United Kingdom are choosing to grow their own food.\u003cbr/\u003eA scheme called 'Food Up Front' is lending a helping hand.\u003cbr/\u003eBut urban farming is not altogether new - in fact it has its roots in wartime Britain in the 1940s .\u003cbr/\u003eIn a quiet back garden in south London, the seeds of a horticultural revolution are being sown. \u003cbr/\u003eIncreasing numbers of consumers are ditching heavily packaged and imported produce in favour of home grown herbs and vegetables. \u003cbr/\u003eKate Swatridge is one of the organisers of 'Food Up Front'. She explains that the organisation aims to encourage people in south London to grow their own food.\u003cbr/\u003eThe kinds of food that can be grown in urban environments are surprisingly varied. They include, tomatoes, courgettes, runner beans, peas, sweetcorn, carrots as well as salad leaves, herbs and chillies.\u003cbr/\u003eKate explains that members of the scheme are provided with the resources needed to get started for a small - cost covering - annual fee.\u003cbr/\u003e'Food Up Front' is a not-for-profit project that relies on community funding, membership fees and volunteers to keep running.\u003cbr/\u003eKate Swatridge says that the scheme has been met with enthusiasm from a large number of local residents.\u003cbr/\u003eThis ordinary house on a busy road in south London is one of the many unlikely settings for harvesting organic produce.\u003cbr/\u003eAlbane Gaspard is originally from Paris. She is one of 'Food Up Front's' most ardent members and also volunteers as one of their 'Street Reps'.\u003cbr/\u003eAlbane explains what she is able to grow in such a small space.\u003cbr/\u003eAside from the benefits she receives from gardening itself, Albane says that there are other, social benefits to being a member of the group. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile growing food may seem like a new-age fad to some, the concept has its roots in British war time history.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at St. James's Park in central London, the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms have helped launch an historical attraction designed to draw parallels with 1940's allotments and today's need for sustainability and recycling.\u003cbr/\u003eCressida Finch is the Exhibitions Manager at the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms. She explains that during the war, Britons were encouraged to grow their own food because imported food was difficult to come by.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors to St. James Park can compare two allotments from the two periods to see what kinds of food were popular to grow then and now. \u003cbr/\u003eFor example, herbs are more popular to grow now but were not considered an effective use of space in
