Wide side shot of Goodling before committee\u003cbr/\u003eThe Justice Department's former White House liaison on Wednesday denied that she played a major role in the firings of US attorneys last year and blamed Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty for misleading Congress.\u003cbr/\u003eTestifying before a packed House Judiciary Committee inquiry into the firings, Monica Goodling said she \"did not hold the keys to the kingdom, as some have suggested.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd she insisted she never spoke with US President George W. Bush's political adviser Karl Rove or White House counsel Harriet Miers about \"the hiring or firing\" of US attorneys.\u003cbr/\u003eGoodling also alleged that Alberto Gonzales' top deputy at the Justice Department - Paul McNulty - knew more about the firings of US attorneys last winter than he told congressional investigators.\u003cbr/\u003eGoodling told the committee she believes \"the deputy was not fully candid\" when he testified before lawmakers.\u003cbr/\u003eMcNulty has disputed her version of events, insisting he testified truthfully and based on what he knew at that time.\u003cbr/\u003e33-year-old Goodling quit the department last month and initially pleaded the Fifth Amendment on Wednesday. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter being granted court-approved immunity, she admitted that in some instances she may have weighed the political views and affiliations of job applicants for jobs as career prosecutors, a violation of federal law.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I may have gone too far, and I may have taken inappropriate political considerations into account on some occasions,\" Goodling said. \"And I regret those mistakes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJustice Department documents show Goodling attended numerous meetings over a year's time about the plans to fire the US attorneys and corresponded with the White House and at least one of the ousted prosecutors before the dismissals were ordered.\u003cbr/\u003eThe furore, in part, has threatened Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' own job as Democrats and even some Republicans have called on him to resign.\u003cbr/\u003eVirginia democrat Bobby Scott hammered Goodling on her decisions to hire prosecutors who favoured Republican priorities.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Scott asked if her actions were illegal, Goodling responded that she
