Shot of Daniella and Maggie looking at laptop  \u003cbr/\u003eSince launching in May 2008, Chinese social networking website www.kaixin001.com has seen incredible growth.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow ranked the 13th most viewed site in the nation, with the largest online population, it combines the usual features of many other social networking sites with a couple of addictive online games.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut in an already crowded sector - and in a country where online copying is rampant - it's anyone's guess whether it will remain as popular, or if a site that hasn't even been dreamt up yet will come along and surpass it.   \u003cbr/\u003eDaniella and Maggie, two twenty-somethings living in Beijing and working for Lenovo, are hooked on China's hot new craze.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe west has Facebook and MySpace; China has Kaixin.  \u003cbr/\u003ewww.kaixin001.com is similar to many other social networking sites, but has a couple of online games as well.\u003cbr/\u003eFor example, in 'Parking War', each user parks his or her cars in a friend's parking spot to earn virtual money, which can be spent on buying more cars. \u003cbr/\u003eBut if that friend catches you, you'll most likely end up with a ticket - and the resulting fine.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn 'Friend Sales', each user can be bought as a slave for a number of hours, and forced to do things like clean the toilet, make a cup of tea or sing a song.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe more you are bought by your friends, the more your value goes up: Daniella proudly reports that she's worth the most of all her 122 online friends, with a value of 53, 538 RMB (approx. 7,828 USD)\u003cbr/\u003eShe also accepts friend requests from people she doesn't know, because the more friends she has in the game, the higher the likelihood they'll outbid each other for her services, and drive her value even higher. \u003cbr/\u003eKaixin (meaning \"happy\" or \"happiness\") has quickly established itself as China's top social networking site.\u003cbr/\u003eAn estimated 30 million users log on everyday and traffic ranking Web site Alexa ranks it the 13th most popular site in the country - not bad for a site that only launched in May 2008.  \u003cbr/\u003eBoth girls have been registered users for about three months and log on frequently, both at home and at work. \u003cbr/\u003eMaggie says there's no problem if she's on the site at work, but has heard that some companies have blocked it, as bosses fear the impact on productivity.  \u003cbr/\u003eLike other social networking sites popular around the world, Kaixin has applications that allows its users to send messages and upload photos. \u003cbr/\u003eYou can play music - and see who else is listening to the same track - or get others to vote in your poll, another way to earn money.  \u003cbr/\u003eC.C. Rain is a singer and actor whose favoured social networking sites is www.MySpace.cn,  a locally owned entity that licenses its brand and technology from www.MySpace.com.\u003cbr/\u003eShe's been logging onto the site daily for over a year, and uses it in part to stay in touch with her friends, but also to promote her music.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut as loyal to MySpace as she is, C.C. and her friends know all about the latest Kaixin craze. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says she also visits leading Chinese web portals Sina and Sohu to get information. \u003cbr/\u003eIn July 2008, China's official net monitoring body announced China had overtaken the US to become the world's largest online population. \u003cbr/\u003eThe China Internet Network Information Centre said there were 253 million online, up 56% on the previous year. \u003cbr/\u003eThat figure is predicted to grow 18% a year and hit 490 million by 2012.  \u003cbr/\u003eiResearch Consulting Group places the total market value of Chinese networking services in 2007 as upwards of 500 million yuan ($73 million), of which social networking services accounted for more than half. \u003cbr/\u003eThe total is predicted to hit 1.6 billion yuan ($233 million) by 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a visit to a typical internet caf� is revealing: no one here is logging onto Kaixin - or any other social networking sites - and the manager says he hasn't even heard of it. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, he says most people come in to play games, except for the foreigners who use Skype to call back home.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe says business has been down this year, since more and more people have computers at home. \u003cbr/\u003eThose that do come in, do so for the group atmosphere, or because the internet connection at the caf� is much faster.  \u003cbr/\u003eOf course, some just come in to catch up on sleep during their lunch break.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the first year since its official launch in September 2007, MySpace China grew to 9.57 million unique visitors and 122.67 million page views, according to iResearch Consulting Group. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's a far cry from the US version www.myspace.com which  web information company Alexa.com ranks third in the US and seventh worldwide. \u003cbr/\u003eBut MySpace China CTO Xiaosheng Tan recognises the importance of the long-term growth battle, having seen several sites here today, gone tomorrow.  \u003cbr/\u003eChina's online market is different to many others because copying is so rampant: if one site has even a hint of traction, others doing the exact same thing will spring up seemingly overnight.  \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the recent success of www.kaixin001.com the registered, but inactive, domain name www.kaixin.com  was purchased in October 2008 and launched with a similar design and operation to www.kaixin001.com. \u003cbr/\u003eThe new Kaixin has become popular in its own right, thanks in part thanks to people who think they're logging onto the original Kaixin.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it gets even more confusing.  Aside from the Chinese version of www.facebook.com  (Alexa ranked 56th in China), there is www.xiaonei.com  (Alexa ranked 22nd in China). \u003cbr/\u003eEstablished in 2005, it also targets students and white collar employees and has more than 22 million registered users. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's run by internet business group Oak Pacific Interactive, the very same company who purchased www.kaixin.com to rival their new competitor www.kaixin001.com . \u003cbr/\u003eAnd all these sites look the same to the casual observer.  \u003cbr/\u003eTan highlights the instability of the market, noting that even the top ranked sites still only reach a small percentage of China's vast population. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while he expects the growth of social networking sites to continue at breakneck speed, he cautions that the turnover of sites could be greater than ever.  \u003cbr/\u003eSomewhat worryingly for Kaixin, though, is the fact that two of their most fervent supporters aren't convinced it has the staying power. \u003cbr/\u003eDaniella says she already beginning to lose her interest, while Maggie says the site could be a distant memory in a year's time.  \u003cbr/\u003eWhat is clear is that social networking in China is already hugely popular and continues to grow. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for the dominant sites in the sector, the trick is not just getting to the top, it's staying
